Time Of Death by Mark Billingham

DI Tom Thorne is on a well-deserved vacation with his girlfriend, DS Helen Weeks.  But they have hardly gotten to their destination when they see on the news that a second girl has gone missing in the town where Helen grew up, and the main suspect is Helen's best friend from school.  Helen insists that they go and support her friend and Thorne agrees.

The evidence is mounting against the husband and when the second missing girl's DNA is found in his truck after he stated he had never given her a ride, he is arrested.  Everyone in the town is relieved although the ordeal won't be over until he gives up the location of the girl, who could still be alive.  Helen's friend is crushed and Helen tries to give her what help she can.

But not everyone is convinced.  Thorne doesn't believe that the police have investigated thoroughly as this is a small town where murders don't happen and the police aren't trained for a case of this magnitude.  As he pokes around the edges of the case, he becomes sure that the arrested man is not guilty of the first murder or either of the kidnappings.  He doesn't know who is yet but he knows enough to be a burr under the police's saddles.

This is the thirteenth Tom Thorne novel in the series.  It's evident that Tom cares deeply for Helen and there isn't much he wouldn't do for her.  Readers will learn more about Helen and her backstory.  Thorne's friend Phil Henricks, a pathologist, comes to help and he starts a relationship that could be serious as well.  The crimes are tricky and the solution is well out of the routine.  This book is recommended for mystery readers.
