Salute The Dark by Adrian Tchaikovsky

The war marches on.  The Wasps have the advantage in numbers with an overwhelming army and new, deathdealing weapons.  The Emperor and his mosquito advisor who is a wizard have obtained the Shadow Box which the emperor has been told can make him immortal.  The Wasps advance and advance with other nations and cities falling before them.

Tisamon is in the Wasp capital, a slave who is fighting as a gladiator against anything the Wasps throw at him and using his Mantis fighting skills and his anger and disappointment in himself to spur him on.  His love is also there although the two are kept apart.  She is the only entity that can meet Tisamon on his own fighting level and the Wasps are sure to match them against each other.

This is the fourth novel in the Shadows Of The Apt series.  Tchaikovsky manages a myriad of characters carefully and skillfully, advancing the plot while telling the stories of each.  There are shocks and heartbreak in this novel as some of my favorite characters are no more going forward into book five.  Things seem dark for those opposing the Wasps but that doesn't stop the resistance as cities and countries fight for their very survival.  I listened to this novel as narrator Ben Allen's voice and accent are a perfect match for the unfolding of this saga.  This book is recommended for fantasy readers.
