Long Gone by Joanna Schaffhausen

The call comes at night as calls tend to do when you're a homicide detective in Chicago.  Officer Leo Hammond was shot and killed in his bed, his wife says by an intruder wearing a frogman's suit.  Hammond was part of a group of four officers who had a reputation for clearing almost all their cases and who had handled some famous ones.  The three surviving men are determined to work this case of their friend and partner's murder, but the brass refuses and gives the case to Annalisa Vega and her partner, Nick Carelli.

Annalisa has issues within the department.  On her last case, she ended up sending both her father and her brother to prison when she determined that they had committed a crime.  Now her family isn't speaking to her and the rest of the police force except for her partner shuns her.  But she's a great cop and this case needs to be solved fast.

There are plenty of suspects.  Leo's first wife despises him after a messy divorce and his second wife just had him take out a million dollar insurance policy.  Then there is Moe Beck.  A flashy car dealer, most of the police force feels that he got away with a murder years ago and now he's dating Annalisa's sister-in-law.  The first murder he was suspected of was investigated by Leo and his friends.  Is that case coming back to life?

This is the second Annalisa Vega novel in the series of five cases.  I listened to this one and the narrator did an excellent job.  Annalisa is a gung-ho detective who is starting to question her choices, including her divorce from her partner Nick.  Once she gets a case she never stops until she can solve it, even when her superiors tell her to back off.  Joanna Schaffhausen is an American author with a doctorate in psychology and a background of writing for network news as well.  Her ability to turn out a tense, fast-moving murder mystery will make her a must read for those who sample her work.  This book is recommended for mystery readers.
