Three Coast Guardsman are killed when they try to board a boat off the Florida coast. That makes it a federal case and a task force is made of local police, FBI and Lucas Davenport and his marshal team. The word on the street is that millions in drugs has been left on the ocean floor and that it is the New York Mafia who are the owners.
How to get more information? Davenport comes up with the idea of using Virgil Flowers, an investigator for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. No one knows him in Florida and he looks like a surfer. Better yet, he can dive and the team knows the diver from the original crew has gone missing so the criminals will be looking for another diver. They team Virgil with Rae Givens, who is also a marshal, posing as his girlfriend and set them up in Fort Lauderdale.
The criminals take the bait and soon Virgil is diving for them. Who will be the ultimate winners?
This is the thirty-first Prey book in the series. This one is interesting not only because the reader learns a lot about diving but because it doesn't sugarcoat the danger of being in law enforcement, no matter the branch. Virgil is always set up as someone who easily fits into criminal situations but is a steely-eyed professional when needed. This book is recommended for mystery readers.
