In this fifth book in the Dark Tower series, Roland, Eddie, Jake and Susannah come upon the town of Calla Bryn Sturgis. It seems prosperous compared to many places they have encountered; food seems plentiful, there is a store and the outlying farms and ranches seem to be doing well. One thing seems strange though. There are children everywhere. Most are twins.
Then they find out the horror that periodically visits the town. About once a generation, the Wolves come on gray horses. They take one of each pair of twins from about four to fifteen. When those taken are returned after a few months, they come back Roont as the town calls them. They have been taken back to the brain level of a two year old and they grow into giants. They also die much earlier than one might expect The worst is about to occur. Andy, the robot who travels the roads and picks up news, tells the townspeople that the Wolves will be coming in about a month.
The Tet discusses it and decides to stay and help. They meet Father Callahan, an alcoholic priest who understands the travel between worlds as he used to be the priest of Salem's Lot. He has the most powerful ball which can take someone wherever they want to go. Eddie makes several trips back to New York where there is a fight about who will own the lot where the rose that makes beauty and peace is harbored. But all is not good. Susannah is pregnant, but not with Eddie's baby. She has also developed another personality named Mia who has no interest in being part of the Tet.
This series just keeps getting better and better as it progresses. This is truly King's masterwork and has depth and interest for readers. I have to take a break between volumes as the tale gets ever more intense leading up to the final battle that is coming. This book is recommended for fantasy and horror readers.
