Welcome to Booksie's Blog! I write reviews of what I've read, some of which were books sent by publishers or authors. If you would like for me to read and review your book, please contact me. I'd love to have the chance to review for you although I don't usually read to deadlines. My email address is skirkland@triad.rr.com I can't accept everything but I do read and review everything I accept. I average about 10-12 reviews a month. I tend to favor physical books over ebooks for review.

GIVEAWAY!!!! JUST FOOD BY JAMES MCWILLIAMS
We suffer today from food anxiety, bombarded as we are with confusing messages about how to eat an ethical diet that's good for you and the planet. Should we eat locally? Is organic really better for the environment? Can genetically modified foods be good for you?
JUST FOOD does for fresh food what Fast Food Nation (Houghton Mifflin, 2001) did for fast food, challenging conventional views, and cutting through layers of myth and misinformation.
For instance, an imported tomato is more energy-efficient than a local greenhouse-grown tomato. And farm-raised freshwater fish may soon be the most sustainable source of protein. Informative and surprising, JUST FOOD tells us how to decide what to eat, and how our choices can help save the planet and feed the world.
James McWilliams is an associate professor of history at Texas State University. He was a fellow at Yale University's Agrarian Studies Program, and is the author of three previous books. He has written for the New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times. He lives in Austin, TX.

I really have no worries about food other than the obvious things like mayonnaise-based salads being left in the sun too long or raw meats left on the counter too long.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be entered in your draw. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteI alws worry about refrigerated food at the grocery stores. SOmetimes I see cold items left on a shelf that a customer must have changed their mind aboutand set down. I worry about staff putting it back in the cooler instead of throwing it out.

I rarely buy items like macaroni salad or potato salad from the grocery store as I am wary of how they've been refrigerated. I prefer my home made ones anyway.

I really don't have too many concerns. About my own concern is food borne illnesses like salmonella and e-coli. So I am just really careful with meat, poultry and eggs.

I love anything that has peanut butter in it But after the past salmonella incident I have been reluctant to buy some of the products that I used to enjoy

I worry about all the "fake" processed food, antibiotics and other hormones that are given/pumped into beef, sheep, chickens, fish, pork and any other farmed animals we consume. All that stuff works it's way up the food chain and saturates in the species that controls that system - us, humans (standard 5th grade environmentally sciences). I've heard scary stories of what it's doing to our kids (early adolecense and menstruation, cancers) and to us. Please accept this as my entry. Thank you!

I worry about the lack of cleanleness from food preparers. Washing hands is very important to me and I am afraid that a lot of the food preparers do not follow with proper hygiene.
ReplyDeleteI worry about the pesticides used on vegetables and fruits and always make sure to wash them thoroughly before eating.
